Here is a glossary of some anatomical and medical terms that will be important to your understanding of the prostrate and BPH. A simple definition of the terms and some related facts are provided.

Prostrate gland Definition: The prostate is the gland of the male reproductive system. It secretes the seminal fluid, a milky substance that combines with sperm produced in the testicles to form semen. << Return to top >> Urethra Definition: The tube leading from the bladder to the outside of the body, through which urine flows to be discharged. In males, the urethra travels through the penis, and also carries the semen. << Return to top >> Urinary tract infection Definition: The urinary tract or system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. An infection occurs when microorganisms, usually bacteria, cling to the opening of the urethra and begin to multiply. << Return to top >> Hyperplasia Definition: A condition in which there is an increase in the number of normal cells in a tissue or organ. << Return to top >> Prostatitis Definition: Inflammation of the prostate gland.
